16,714 absent over #EndSARS as NECO releases common entrance results

The National Examinations Council (NECO) on Monday November 16, released the 2020 National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) results.

The exam body which fixed the national cut off marks at 142, said 16,713 candidates were absent due to the #EndSARS protests that rocked the country recently.

Godswill Obioma, NECO’s registrar who disclosed this while presenting the results to the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu in Abuja disclosed that a total of 70,580 candidates sat for the examination nationwide, out of which 24,416 candidates passed, scoring a minimum of 66.

He also revealed that three students got the highest scores and they are Umeonyiagu Chinua Crucifixio from Anambra State (199), Onwuamanam Udochukwu from Enugu State (198) and Salaam Mariam Aderemilekun from Lagos State (197).

After receiving the results, Adamu commended the council over the conduct of the exam despite the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic and the #EndSARS protest. He added that the carrying capacity of unity colleges has been increased to 26,625 for the current academic year following the establishment of six more federal science and technical colleges across the six geopolitical zones.

The Minister said;

“The total carrying capacity of our 110 Unity Colleges now stands 26,625, having added 720 slots with the establishment of six more Federal Science and Technical Colleges across the six geopolitical zones,” he said.

“As has been the tradition for decades, the admission criteria include 60 per cent strictly on merit, 30 per cent based on states’ representation in the Unity Colleges and the remaining 10 per cent to cover other sundry considerations such as special needs candidates, gender, local community and biological children of teachers, PTA, SBMC and old students organizations, etc.

“This year’s admission will be based on 60 per cent merit, followed by the 30 per cent equality of States and 10 per cent discretion.

“I have, therefore, directed that within 72 hours of the receipt of the results, principals are to complete both the merit-based (60 per cent) and 30 per cent of equality of states admission.

“The selection meeting to be held at a designated date and venue will deal with the shopping and swapping of candidates to meet the 30 per cent states representation as much as possible.”

My kidnappers lost bet on Super Eagles vs Sierra Leone – Obodo

Speaking after at his release, the former Udinese star who has 21 caps for Nigeria, told Brila FM on Monday that his kidnappers had lost a bet on the Super Eagles.

Recall that Gernot Rohr’s men gave away a four-goal lead against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone on Sunday as they played out a 4-4 draw in the African Cup of Nations qualifier.

“It was really discomforting locked up in a hot car trunk for hours,” Obodo told Brila FM.

“The kidnappers were even telling me about how they lost money for placing bets on Nigeria to score in the second half.

“They didn’t hurt me or intimidate me but I can’t understand the reason for anyone to want to put me through this sort of thing over again.”

It’s the second time the former Udinese midfielder will be kidnapped by gunmen. He was first abducted on June 9, 2012, on his way to church in Effurun, Warri.

But the day after he was taken, police tracked his abductors to Isoko, just outside Warri, where they found Obodo and arrested some suspects.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles have a chance to bounce back as head to Freetown for a return leg against Sierra Leone on Tuesday.

Flamini speaks on buying Arsenal

Published

on

Former Arsenal midfielder, Mathieu Flamini, has denied he could return to Emirates Stadium as owner.

The 36-year-old Frenchman has taken in two spells with the Gunners, either side of a stint with Serie A giants AC Milan.

He has 246 appearances for the Premier League side to his name, along with three FA Cup successes and a Champions League final appearance.

A strong bond with Arsenal has been retained since heading to pastures new, with a close eye kept on how the Premier League heavyweights are faring.

It has been suggested that Flamini could make his way back to north London at some stage, with his efforts away from the field helping to further raise his profile and bank balance – with denials having to be made in the recent past that he has €30 billion (£27bn/$36bn) to his name.

Asked by The Athletic whether he expects to launch a bid for control at the Emirates, Flamini said: “No!

“Don’t ask me how I’ll be involved in football, because it’s not something I’ve thought about. But, definitely, it’s something which I’ve been part of forever in my life. I will always want to be part of this community.”
