Africa Is Poorly Ready For Third Wave Of COVID-19 – WHO

The World Health Organisation has said Africa is poorly ready for the third wave of the deadly COVID-19, considering how vaccine deliveries are at a near-standstill and the continent is lacking key resources in frontline care.
This is coming a few days after the UN organisation ranked Nigeria the best in vaccines administration in Africa, saying other countries in the black continent are looking up to the Giant of Africa.
Speaking in an online briefing, the World Health Organization’s regional director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti said many African hospitals and clinics are still far from ready to cope with a huge rise in critically ill patients as the threat of a third wave of COVID-19 in Africa is real and rising. Calling for better equipment for hospital and medical staff in Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti stressed that treatment is the last line of defence against this virus and “we cannot let it be breached”.

As the continent has seen a rise in infections in recent weeks, with South Africa being the most affected country, the WHO warned in a statement that the pandemic is trending upwards in 14 countries. “In the past week alone, eight countries witnessed an abrupt rise of over 30 percent in cases”, the statement said.
Africa has officially registered over 4.8 million COVID-19 cases and 130,000 deaths, according to the WHO, a figure representing 2.9 percent of global cases and 3.7 percent of deaths.
