Air Force opens training centre in Makurdi

CHIEF of Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar has said the remodelled School of Air Intelligence in Makurdi, Benue State, will strengthen the fight against insurgency.

At the opening of the NAF School of Air Intelligence at NAF Base in Makurdi, Abubakar reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to reposition the Air Force into a highly professional and disciplined force through capacity building.

He said the renovated facilities will ensure effective, efficient and timely training and employment of personnel.

The CAS, who also inspected aircrafts at the hanger of the Tactical Air Command (TAC) said the Air Force NAF has begun the repairs of nine grounded F7-NI fighter aircrafts as part of its efforts to continue to protect the country’s territorial integrity.

Abubakar explained that the idea was to first ensure that NAF has the required platform serviceable and, secondly, to build the capacity of its personnel.

He said: “Work is ongoing on nine F7-NI fighter aircrafts; seven will be crated and taken to China for maintenance and two would be done locally here.

“That is why the life extension programme which is an aspect of the maintenance job is done locally here in Makurdi. It’s similar to what we are doing in Kainji and Ikeja where we reactivated the C-130 aircraft.

“The 917 which is parked outside there is one of the two C-130 that were reactivated in Ikeja; the first time in the history of our service.”

The CAS hinted that NAF is expecting an additional aircraft from Pakistan, saying the inaugurated facilities would accommodate technicians and pilots who would be coming to support NAF operation for the first one year when the aircraft arrives.

I regret signing visitation panel’s report, says chairman

Published

 Yusuf Alli, Abuja

CHAIRMAN of the Special Visitation Panel on the crisis in the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Hamman Tukur Saad, has faulted some recommendations of the committee in its report.

He regretted signing the panel’s report, which the university’s Visitor, President Muhammadu Buhari, acted upon to dissolve the Governing Council and reinstate the sacked Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.

Prof. Saad stated these in an October 7, 2020 personal letter to the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, and a November 10, 2020 letter to the Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari.

The letter to Prof. Gambari reads: “As Chairman, I didn’t want to sign the Final Report, but I felt that would be a slap on the face of the government and it would generate so much bad publicity in the public domain, that I would rather sign on the understanding that the matter would be referred to the Shehu of Borno, as the Chancellor.

“As it stands now, I feel I was made a fool of and stabbed on the back by people I trusted. Furthermore, it will be impossible for any Council to manage a university in this country, if the recommendations of the panel are implemented in a Whitepaper.”

Saad’s letter to Adamu contained some revelations which were hitherto not in the public domain.

The chairman said as soon as the panel was inaugurated, he secured the mandate of the Federal Ministry of Education to bring in the Chancellor to mediate in the UNILAG crisis.

“The final recommendation of the panel was that the matter should be referred back to the Chancellor, irrespective of what the panel recommended.”

A Human Rights Activist is suing Falz, Aisha Yesufu, FK Abudu for their involvement in the #EndSARS Protest

Published

It is no longer news that the #EndSARS and #EndPoliceBrutality protests have gone on for weeks now, taking centre stage of events in the country. Although the unit has been disbanded and protests have been put on hold, Nigerian youths are still using their voices and platforms to ensure that their demands are met.

A judicial panel of inquiry has been set up by the Lagos State government to investigate the 20-10-2020 Lekki Toll Gate shooting, and other cases of extortion and brutality meted out by the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

However, there have been reports of several protesters being threatened and sued, while some have had their bank accounts deactivated or their passports seized.

Just when you think it’s all going to end, something else comes up.

On Monday, an acclaimed government-sponsored human rights activist, Kenechukwu Okeke sued 50 Nigerian celebrities and public figures including Davido, Tiwa Savage, Burna Boy, FK Abudu, Aisha Yesufu, Banky W, Pastor Sam Adeyemi, Pamilerin Adegoke, Uche Jumbo, Paul Okoye, Peter Okoye, 2Baba, Tacha, Yemi Alade, Kiki Mordi and more, alleging that their involvement in the protest led to violence and therefore, “destruction of properties and loss of lives.”

The motion which was filed at the Federal Capital Territory Magistrate Court, Abuja, “brought pursuance to Sections 88, 109 (a), 110 (1) (c) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.” It partly read,

That the 1st to 50th accused persons between the 3rd day of October 2020 and the 28th day of October 2020, using Twitter, an Internet web source with URL https://www.twitter.com within the jurisdiction of this honourable court did conspire amongst themselves to commit misdemeanor, to wit, promoting and acting in such a manner, with intent to assist in the promotion of #EndSARS and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 97(2) of the Penal Code Act, C53 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

That the 1st to 50th accused persons with intent to carry out some common purpose, assemble in such a manner or being assembled under the composition of #EndSARS as to cause persons in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to fear on reasonable grounds that such assembly needlessly and without any reasonable occasion may provoke other persons tumultuously to disturb the peace.

Properties belonging to the complaint were egregiously destroyed by some riotous and tumultuous persons instigated and incited by the 1st to 50th accused persons.
