Akon under spotlight on Glo-sponsored African Voices

This week’s edition of the popular television magazine, CNN African Voices ChangeMakers, will be spotlighting African mega star, Akon. The flagship programme of America-based  Cable News Network (CNN) is sponsored by telecommunications company, Globacom.


Akon, whose real name is Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, was born in April 1973 to Senegalese parents, but has lived in the US for decades. He has made an indelible mark in the world of music. He is a songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and actor. He was listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the number-one selling artist for master ringtones in the world.


Akon broke into the global music scene in 2004 with his hit album, “Lonely”. His second album “Konvicted” received three nominations for the Grammy Awards, Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Smack That” and “I Wanna Love You”. The album also gained four top-ten hits in the US with “Smack That,” “I Wanna Love You,” “Don’t Matter,” and “Sorry, Blame It on Me.”

Akon’s immense success has rubbed off on his home country. He is currently building a city which he named AkonCity in Senegal. He has also taken personal interest in helping underprivileged children in the country through a charity organization known as Konfidence Foundation.

In 2010, Akon was ranked 80th (Power Rank) in Forbes Celebrity 100. In 2011, he was ranked 5th in 40 Most Powerful Celebrities in Africa. Billboard ranked him 6th on the list of Top Digital Songs Artists of the decade.
