Former South Africa President Jacob Zuma Granted Compassionate Leave From Prison

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been granted compassionate leave from prison in order to attend his brother’s funeral on Thursday. The brother of the former president passed away last week after a long illness.

South Africa’s Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services in a statement shared that “a sentenced offender who is granted permission to leave a correctional centre, remains a sentenced offender even while temporarily outside. The permission granted to Mr. Zuma is for July 22.” While outside the correctional facility on Thursday, Zuma will not be needed to wear the offender uniform.

“As a short-term, low-risk classified inmate, Mr. Zuma’s application for compassionate leave was processed and approved following the correctional services prescript,” the statement read.
