FG delegation and South East leaders meet in Enugu, reject agitation for secession

FG delegation and South East leaders meet in Enugu, reject agitation for secession

A delegation from the Federal Government led by the Minister of Defence, Retired Maj. Gen. Bashir Magashi, Governors of the five States of the South East and other leaders of political, religious and traditional institutions in the zone, met at the Enugu state government house today June 11 where they discussed the security challenges confronting the region in particular and Nigeria in general.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting, the Defence Minister, Magashi, disclosed that the delegation will relay the commitment reached at the parley and other outcomes of the consultation to President Muhammadu Buhari.

FG delegation and South East leaders meet in Enugu, reject agitation for secession

The Defence Minister who was accompanied by his Interior Ministry counterpart and the Service Chiefs, explained that they were in Enugu for a consultative meeting with leaders of the South East zone on the issues of instability and criminality, at the instance of President Buhari.

He added that the meeting agreed that there were fundamental issues that need to be addressed in the South East region.

The leader of the Presidential delegation stated that one of the issues is the farmers/ herders conflict which, he said will “be given the necessary accord to stop this menace all over the country, from the perspective of national interest”.

Magashi revealed that the second issue they discussed was “the problem of marginalization”, stressing it “is well accepted and further discussion will continue after we have met with Mr. President to see their grievances and after the governors will articulate the grievances so that we can have further discussion on them”.

The Minister further disclosed that the delegation endorsed the Community Policing Model of the South East governors, adding that it “should be encouraged because we have set precedence in the Amotekun in the Western part of the country”.

“We appreciate our discussions. We are most humbled and I think each one of us; the governors, the elders, the religious leaders were able to say one or two things.

We would put our heads together to see that peace and stability of this nation are brought back to normalcy in no distance time.

We are appealing to the media to report the positive side of government and encourage us to pursue legitimate ways in which we can bring peace and stability in this country” he said

In an address at the meeting, the Governor of Ebonyi State and Chairman of South East Governors Forum, Dave Umahi, on behalf of the leaders of the zone, restated their commitment to national unity, saying that “this sincere commitment is a new dawn not only to South East but to entire Nigeria”.

Commenting on the ban on open grazing, Gov. Umahi said

“Just on a very minor specifics for the emphasis of our people, we discussed the issue of ban on open grazing and of course this delegation is in support of this ban on open grazing and we also informed the delegation that each of the South East states has laws in this respect”.

The South East Governors Forum Chairman noted that the commitment of the Federal Government towards addressing all the issues pertaining to herdsmen in the South East is very important.

He stated that the governors have agreed to articulate all the grievances and concerns of the people of the South East “as spelt out by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo”, saying: “We are happy that there is genuine willingness for further dialogue on such issues”.

Gov. Umahi maintained that Ebube Agu is the only recognized local security outfit in the South East, emphasizing that “no other security outfit is speaking for South East and this is the position of Ndigbo”.

According to him

“We are committed to one united Nigeria; we have always mentioned this; all our leaders are committed to this and that is why we read it everywhere, a united Nigeria of fairness, equity and equality of freedom and this we have further expressed.

“Those who dish out hate speeches from our region, threat of violence or secession do not speak for South East. I repeat, we the South East people are not for secession, we don’t support it; we don’t call for it.

“We condemn the killings of security men and innocent people in the South East and the governors are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of our people. We are supporting the security agencies. We finally appeal to our people to continue to engage our youths to eschew violence”.

Earlier in his opening remark, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, described the Town Hall meeting as timely and apt, expressing optimism that the outcome of the meeting will address the security challenges in the South East zone.

Gov. Ugwuanyi who stressed the need for all government structures to uphold the security and welfare of the people as the primary purpose of government (enshrined in the 1999 Constitution), said that the consultation with the Service Chiefs and critical stakeholders of the South East zone, on the current security challenges, “underscores the centrality of this security responsibility in our consideration”.

Other South East leaders in the meeting include Governors of Abia and Imo states, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and Senator Hope Uzodinma respectively, Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Nkem Okeke, the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Hon. Uchechukwu Ogah, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Amb. Prof. George Obiozor, former President of the Senate, Senator Ken Nnamani, Senator Ike Ekweramadu, Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. TIME magazine blasted for exaggerated attempt to make Joe Biden ‘look cool’ and tough on its cover ahead of Putin meeting

TIME magazine blasted for exaggerated attempt to make Joe Biden ?look cool? and tough on its cover ahead of Putin meeting

TIME magazine has been mocked online after the paper unveiled its upcoming cover image on Friday, June 11.

The magazine cover shows a sunglasses-wearing US President Biden, and comes ahead of the upcoming summit between Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Geneva on June 16.

The illustration features Biden in his signature aviator shades with the headline, “Taking on Putin.”

TIME magazine consecutively published unflattering illustrations of former President Donald Trump, complete with a pair of covers showing his “meltdown” stages and another set of covers showing Trump’s Oval Office filling up with water amid a “stormy” situation.

During Trump’s time the magazine even edited Trump and Putin together ahead of their summit back in 2020. Now that Biden is in office, readers have taken notice of the magazine attempting to make Biden look tough.

TIME magazine blasted for exaggerated attempt to make Joe Biden ?look cool? and tough on its cover ahead of Putin meeting

“This cover attempts to make Joe Biden look cool, but even in their flattering depiction of his face — a drawing because he would look incredibly elderly and weak in a current high-def pic — he has his typical gaping mouth that makes him look clueless and afraid of Putin who is staring him down with a confident smirk,” political satirist Tim Young reacted on Twitter.

“I can’t help but remember the cover of TIME where their editors pushed a lie by editing a Honduran child they claimed to have been separated from her parents by Trump on the cover with Trump – it turned out the child hadn’t been separated at all, but that image had been used to ruin Trump, which was their entire biased game for four years,” Young said.

Former acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Richard Grenell added;

“Giving him a pipeline of leverage into Europe is NOT taking him on. It’s giving in,” .

National Review’s Kyle Smith said;, “DNC press releases aren’t this sycophantic.”

“Wonder why there was no such ‘Trump takes out Soleimani’ cover,” one reader pondered.

Stop the current genocide against the Igbos in the South-East and parts of the South-South– Igbo Elders tell FG

 Stop the current genocide against the Igbos in the South-East and parts of the South-South? Igbo Elders tell FG

The Igbo Elders Council have accused security agencies of indiscriminately killing Igbo youths in the South-East, in the guise of fighting members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB and its security network, Eastern Security Network.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja today June 11, the chairman of the group and a former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, alleged that dozens of young people, mostly male, are being extrajudicially executed on a daily basis by security operatives in the region.

“We condemn without any reservation the destruction of public properties in the South-East, because it is not in our character to indulge in arson, brigandage.

We believe however that it is not fair and just to use a sledge hammer to kill harmless flies.

Security agencies now indiscriminately invade private homes at odd hours, in the same guise of fishing out presumed IPOB and ESN members.

They arrest men and sometimes shoot innocent and hapless youths.

We therefore call on President Muhamamdu Buhari, the United Nations, the European Union, African Union, ECOWAS, to take urgent and necessary action to stop the current genocide against the Igbos in the South-East and parts of the South-South.” Ezeife said

June 12 Protest: Police re-arrest Agba Jalingo

Agba Jalingo, a rights activist and newspaper publisher has been arrested by police in Calabar, Cross River State, ahead of the nationwide protest on June 12.

Cross River Watch reported that Agba was arrested at the police headquarters in Calabar on Friday June 11, where he went to honour an invitation by the Commissioner of Police in the State, Kayode Sikiru.

It was gathered that he was invited by the police to discuss the planned nationwide June 12 protest which he was said to be coordinating in the state. After the discussion ended, he was reportedly referred to another officer who informed him that the police had received a petition of him being an arms dealer.

Police spokesperson in Cross River State, Irene Ugbo said;

“There was a petition against him that he is a member of drug dealers, so we called him to question him.

“He is still writing his stuff (response to the petition). When he finishes we’ll let him go if we find him not wanting.”

Agba had earlier been arrested and arraigned in court by the Cross River state government after he published an article in 2020, alleging that Governor Ben Ayade could not account for N500 million belonging to the Cross River State Government. He was accused then of terrorism and treasonable felony.

Only the national assembly can handle the issue of restructuring

Only the national assembly can handle the issue of restructuring - Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that only the national assembly can take care of the issue of restructuring or true federalism.

The President who said this on Friday June 11 while receiving members of the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) led by Co-Chairmen, Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar and President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), His Eminence, Rev. Dr. Samson Supo Ayokunle at the State House, Abuja, stated that the issue of restructuring remain a constitutional matter.

He said;

“On the contentious issue of restructuring or true federalism or devolution of powers, like you all know, this is a constitutional matter with which only the National Assembly can deal.

“I remain an unapologetic believer in devolving power to the people and that is why I signed the Executive Order granting autonomy to State Legislature and Judiciary.

“Unfortunately, this was met with some resistance at the state level and led to a more than two months strike action that has cost the country a lot of pain.

“Luckily, the National Assembly has nearly completed the constitutional review process, which I hope would address some of the burning issues agitating the minds of our people.’’

The President also disclosed that they have arrested some of the financiers of criminal elements who also supply them with arms. He said their prosecution has been stalled by the just called off strike by judicial workers.

Buhari said;

“Fortunately, this strike has been called off and prosecution of some of these people would soon commence, while our security agencies expand their network in closing in on the others.

“We remain committed to quickly pushing this dark side of our history behind us and we are currently making sure that funding would not hamper our efforts.

“Besides the imperative to abide by democratic processes is the important aspect of support of the citizenry to the security agencies by providing relevant and timely information.

“I must confess that I am more pained than anyone can imagine with the on-going security challenges because, like you noted during your meeting, they have increased the hunger, pain and anger in the land.”

He also disclosed that some funds were approved for security agencies at the last Federal Executive Council meeting. He said the money will be put to judicious use.

Buhari added;

“As I mentioned yesterday, in Lagos, we would not relent in our efforts at clearing these criminals from all parts of our land including the forests.”

It’s unfair to say Twitter ban was because Buhari’s tweet was deleted

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has said that it is unfair to say that the decision to ban Twitter’s operation in the country was because President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet was deleted.

The Minister who appeared on an NTA programme on Friday June 11, said the decision was taken over the promotion of views that could cause division in the country by the social media platform.

Mohammed also insisted that other social media platforms operating in Nigeria will have to first register with the Corporate Affairs Commission and then apply for licensing with the NBC.

“People have tried to say Twitter was suspended because they deleted the president’s message. I think that is very unfair. We were very clear in what we said. We were very unambiguous that if any platform continues to promote the views of those who want Nigeria to be divided, we will suspend their operations.

“Secondly, we went ahead to say that henceforth, all OTT — over the top — and other social media platforms operating in Nigeria will have to first register with the Corporate Affairs Commission then apply for licensing with the NBC, that is the broadcasting commission.

“We gave the reason that this has become the platform of choice for [a] separatist leader in particular, who stays comfortably in Europe and directs people to attack the symbols of our sovereignty — the symbols of government authorities.”

Malaria Eradication Project: United Nations and WHO visit Prince Ned Nwoko, the latter urges greater focus on Malaria Vaccine research

The Chairman of Prince Ned Nwoko Foundation and the founder of Malaria eradication in Africa programme, Hon (Dr) Ned Munir Nwoko has stressed the need for greater public-private sector synergy including multilateral agencies in the quest to achieve a malaria-free Africa. He spoke at the weekend at Mount Ned Resort in Idumuje-Ugboko, Delta State where he hosted senior United Nations (UN) and the World Health Organization (WHO) delegations. The event was part of the Prince Ned Nwoko Foundation’s plan to build wider coalition towards wiping out malaria disease from Nigeria and the African continent at large. The high caliber officials of the two multilateral organizations hosted by the popular malaria eradicator were the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, the WHO Nigerian Representative, Dr Walter Kazadi Mulombo and many top diplomats, researchers, scholars and several stakeholders in the Foundation’s malaria eradication project.  The billionaire businessman and Pan-African statesman, Prince Ned Nwoko, has been engaging the UN and the WHO together with other stakeholders in his relentless campaign to push the anti-malaria programme in Africa above the threshold of control and palliatives to total eradication through multi-faceted approach. He observed that vaccines were invented against COVID-19 even at a stage when the true causative factors of the pandemic were still a mystery. He reasoned that malaria disease which has mosquito clearly identified as its cause ought to present lesser challenge with regard to vaccine research. Prince Ned Nwoko stated that the same kind of speed with which the entire world came together to research and invent effective vaccines against COVID-19 can be applied to invent reliable vaccines that would deal a death knell on malaria scourge which is still ravaging Africa and some other parts of the world. He attributed the lukewarm global approach to the malaria challenge to the fact that it is often viewed as Africa’s problem by the developed nations whereas the disease claims over 400,000 lives annually.  According to the former Federal lawmaker, his foundation is collaborating with stakeholders to eradicate malaria in Africa through a combination of steps. These include environmental sanitization including proper waste management, fumigation of the environment and research for an effective anti-malaria vaccine. He also disclosed that his foundation was working closely with relevant lawmakers on a bill which he has forwarded to the National Assembly for the establishment of malaria eradication agency. Speaking, the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Edward Kallon stated that public-private partnership is vital to achieving lasting result in the anti-malaria campaign. He said that is the same way COVID is destroying the economies of some developed nations that malaria has been ravaging the African countries’ economies for centuries. He called for support for the Prince Ned Nwoko malaria eradication initiative.  The WHO Nigerian Representative, Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo expressed willingness of his office to collaborate with the foundation. He said that the trials of RTS,S vaccine has shown that it provided modest protection against both clinical and severe malaria in young infants. He said the vaccine has been rolled out in pilot projects in three countries in sub-Saharan Africa namel Ghana, Malawi and Kenya.   The foundation is desirous of fostering and fast tracking collaboration with the UN and WHO on the Malaria Project, particularly on the areas of advocacy, vaccine implementation, environmental management and international diplomacy. It is expected that the WHO will help to fast track the implementation of the RTSS in Nigeria and other AfricanThe post Malaria Eradication Project: United Nations and WHO visit Prince Ned Nwoko, the latter urges greater focus on Malaria Vaccine research Follow Linda Ikeji Blog.
