Majid Michel, Kuami Eugene, other Ghanaian celebrities attend ‘Beyond the Return’ masterclass

A number of Ghanaian celebrities thronged Kempinski Hotel in Accra for a masterclass organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in collaboration with the Creative Arts Council, Beyond the Return Secretariat and the Bridge Zone Africa.

Themed ‘Black Stories Matter: Forging Collaborations for the Development of Ghana’s Creative Industry’, the event, held on September 30, 2020 was attended by actors, musicians and television personalities including Pauline Oduro, Kuami Eugene, Keche and Dada KD and actors Martha Ankomah, Salinko, Gloria Sarfo, Majid Michel, Roselyn Ngissah, Bill Asamoah and Pascaline Edwards.

Also present were James Gardiner, Jackie Appiah, Timothy Bentum, Elikem The Tailor, Fred Kyei Mensah, Abrantie the fashion designer.

The panel included Professor Eleanor Earl, a film lecturer at the Hampton University, Chris Roland, Vasall Benford, Lamann Rucker, Baron Davis, Etu Evans, Shelby Stone, Asante Bradford, RJ Bucaria and Philonese West.

Moderated by TV host, Ivy Prosper, the masterclass was the brainchild of Prince Anthony Bart-Appiah, a Royal and grandson of the QueenMother of Akwamu traditional area and the CEO of TheBridgezone – an organization which seeks to bridge the gap between Africa and African Americans through collaborations and partnership.

‘Beyond the Return’ is a 10-year initiative with the theme ‘A Decade of African Renaissance.’ The project builds on the success of the ‘Year of Return, Ghana 2019,’ which was a major landmark spiritual and birth-right journey inviting the Global African family home and abroad to Ghana to mark 400 years of the arrival of the first documented enslaved Africans in Jamestown, ‘Beyond The Return’ will grow Ghana’s tourism industry, showcase its investment potential, and solidify its global diaspora engagement programs.

The Beyond the Return initiative has provided the rare opportunity for Ghanaian and African-American creatives to explore the many possibilities for collaboration in the areas of film, television, fashion, gaming, animation, music, and more.

Yemi is an Afropop singer, songwriter, actress and activist. She won the Peak Talent Show in 2009 after which she signed to Effyzzie Music Group, and had a hit with her single “Johnny” in 2014 which gained her popularity beyond Nigeria. She has since been doing great in the music industry and is no doubt one of the most popular female songstress in Africa.

2. TIWA SAVAGE (11.8 million followers)

Tiwa Sava, a singer, songwriter and actress participated in the UK edition of The X Factor. She graduated from Berklee College of Music, and signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 2009. Inspired by the growth of the Nigerian music industry, Savage moved back to Nigeria and signed with Mavin Records in 2012. Her success has been one for the books.

3. FUNKE AKINDELE (11.6 million followers)

Akindele-Bello Olufunke Ayotunde is an actress and producer. She’s best known for her comics roles. Funke starred in the sitcom I Need to Know from 1998 to 2002, and in 2009 she won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She plays the lead character in her own show, Jenifa’s Diary, for which she was named Best Actress in a Comedy at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.

4. INI EDO (10.3 million followers)

Ini Edo is an actress. She began her film career in 2000, and has featured in more than 100 movies since her debut. In 2013, she was a judge for the Miss Black Africa UK Pageant. In 2014, Ms. Edo was appointed by the United Nations as aUnited Nations Habitat Youth Envoy.

5. MERCY JOHNSON (9.1 million followers)

Mercy Johnson Okojie is one of the most talented actresses, who is good at what she does. She is also producer. In 2009, she won an award for Best Supporting Actress at the 2009 African Movie Award ceremony for her performance in the movie “Live to Remember” and Best Actress award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for her role in the comedy movie “Dumebi the Dirty Girl”.

6. REGINA DANIELS (8.7 million followers)

Genevieve Nnaji is one actress that is loved by many. She’s also a producer, and director. She won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2005, making her the first actor to win the award. In 2011, she was honoured as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic by the Nigerian government for her contributions to Nollywood. Her directorial debut movie, Lionheart, is the first Netflix Original from Nigeria, and first Nigerian submission for the Oscars. Though the movie was disqualified for having most of its dialogue in English. Genevive is popularly known by one of her character names, Sharon Stone.

8. SIMI (8 million followers)

Simi, is a singer and songwriter. She started her career as a gospel singer, releasing her debut studio album in 2008, titled Ogaju. She gained prominence in 2014 after releasing “Tiff”, a song that was nominated for Best Alternative Song at The Headies 2015. Simi signed a record deal with X3M Music in 2014, but left the label in May 2019 following the expiration of her contract.

9. CHIDINMA EKILE (7.5 million followers)

Chidinma, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. In 2010, she rose to stardom after winning the third season of Project Fame West Africa. Following the release of the music video for her “Emi Ni Baller” single, she became the first female musician to peak at number 1 on the MTV Base Official Naija Top 10 chart.

10. RITA DOMINIC (6.8 million followers)

Rita Dominic starred in her first movie in 1998, tittled, “A Time to Kill”. She won the City People Awards in 2004 as the Most Outstanding Actress. In 2012, she won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
