Following an unfortunate and criminally coordinated attack on the Mother Francisca International Bilingual Academy in the city of Kumba, it has been confirmed that about 8 children were killed with many others left with injuries.

The incident which occurred on Saturday, October 24 shortly after schools had been reopened at the beginning of the month has been described by the UN as “the worst atrocity” since.

Reports, however, suggest that this attack by the merciless gunmen might be somehow related to the present chaos occurring among armed groups and the government.

A statement released by the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) read;

“At least eight children were killed as a result of gunshots and attack with machetes. Another twelve were wounded and taken to local hospitals.”

Further reports explain that following their decision to jump from the second-storey windows, some of the children got wounded. In a video making rounds online, parents could be spotted weeping uncontrollably after seeing the lifeless bodies of their children lying on the ground.

City Sub-Prefect, Ali Anougou narrating the attack told the news organization Reuters;

“They found the children in class and they opened fire on them”

One of the parents of the affected students, Isabel Dione reporting to Reuters informed that she rushed to the school only to discover her 12-year-old daughter lying on the floor while bleeding from the stomach. The young girl was however taken to the nearest hospital for medical care.

Dione stated:

“She was helpless and she was shouting ‘mum please help me’, and I told her ‘only your God can save you now”

Ahhim Abanaw Obase, a local education official revealed that the age of dead children ranged from the age of 12 to 14 years, adding that another eight children had been sent to the hospital.
