South Korean Toilet Turns Faeces Into Power And Digital Currency (Photos)

South Korean students are being paid to use eco-friendly toilet that takes methane from poop to power building

Using the bathroom could pay for your coffee at a university in South Korea, where human waste is being used to help power a science building.

Cho Jae-weon, an urban and environmental engineering professor at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in southeast Korea, has designed an eco-friendly toilet connected to a laboratory that uses excrement to produce biogas and manure.

The BeeVi toilet — a portmanteau of the words ‘bee’ and ‘vision’ — uses a vacuum pump to send feces into an underground tank, reducing water use.

Once there, microorganisms break down the waste into methane, which becomes a source of energy for the building.

The gas powers a stove, hot-water boiler and solid oxide fuel cell.

‘If we think out of the box, feces has precious value to make energy and manure,’ said Cho. ‘I have put this value into ecological circulation.’

The average adult defecates about 17 ounces a day, which can be converted to 13 gallons of methane, according to Cho.

That’s enough energy to generate 0.5kWh of electricity, enough to charge your phone for an hour every day for a month or drive a car for about three-quarters of a mile.

Cho isn’t just relying on altruism or environmental conscientiousness to get people to use his eco-toilet, either: He’s devised a virtual currency, Ggool, (‘honey’ in Korean) and pays users, mostly students, 10 Ggool a day to hit the can.

The currency can be used to buy goods on campus—like freshly brewed coffee, instant noodles, fruit and even books.

The students can pick up the products they want at a special Ggool market and scan a QR code to pay for their goods.

‘I had only ever thought that feces is dirty, but now it is a treasure of great value to me,’ Heo Hui-jin, a postgraduate student at the university, said in the Ggool market. ‘I even talk about feces during mealtimes, to think about buying any book I want.’

Not all efforts at creating environmentally friendly toilets have proven successful in the long run: in September, UK conservation group the Waterwise Project says dual-flush toilets, intended to save water is actually wasting billions of gallons every year, far more than they save.

Dual-flush toilets are prone to leaks, the group says, and are the leading culprit in the 88 million gallons of water wasted a day.

‘Because so many dual-flush toilets flow continuously, that water loss is now exceeding the amount of water they should be saving nationally,’ Andrew Tucker, water efficiency manager at Thames Water, told the BBC.

Popularized in the West in the 1980s, the two-button toilets were seen as environmentally friendly because they give patrons a choice of how much water to use: one button releases a full 1.6-gallons for solid waste, while the other just half of that for urine.

But Thames Water found as many of half of its customers used the wrong button—or pressed both simultaneously.

Multiple Websites Are Experiencing Massive Internet Outage

Many websites — including banking pages, brokerages, and gaming services — have been affected by what looks to be a major internet outage. As website owners and companies that run services that provide the backbone of the web scramble to solve the issue, consumers have been left unable to access services like Ally Bank, Fidelity, Sony’s PlayStation Network, Airbnb, and more. Several airline sites are also having issues: Delta, British Airways, and Southwest’s sites are all having major issues.

At the moment, it’s unclear what’s causing the outage, though DownDetector reports that both AWS and Akamai, a pair of content delivery networks that host much of the internet, are both experiencing issues.

Akamai’s status page reports that the company is currently investigating an issue with its DNS service. Cloudflare’s CEO has chimed in to say that its service isn’t to blame. We’ve reached out to Akamai and Oracle; its Oracle Cloud has also been mentioned as potentially having an issue.

Some sites are displaying error messages, and some fail to load all together.

Gaming services have also been hit hard. DownDetector reports a spike of over 40,000 users who are having issues with the PlayStation Network, and the Steam store is also not currently functioning. DownDetector also reports issues with games like Fortnite and Call of Duty. Sony’s PSN status page acknowledged an issue shortly before we published this post: “PlayStation Network services are up and running, but there are external, internet-wide issues that might affect your experience,” the company wrote.

Pingdom’s live map shows that the issue is global.

As far as more essential services, many banks’ websites appear to be nonfunctional, and there are reports of 911 systems being down across multiple states. It is, however, unclear if the emergency services outage is related to the other web outages — the Sheriff’s Department of Grayson County, Virginia, reports that its 911 outage stems from a fiber cut.

UAE Creates Rain Using Drone Technology That Gives Cloud Electric Shock (Pictures)

The United Arab Emirates is creating its own rain using drones that fly into clouds and unleash electrical charges to beat the sweltering 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius) heat.

The rain is formed using drone technology that gives clouds an electric shock to ‘cajole them’ into clumping together and producing precipitation.

The technology uses a drone to release electrical charges into the clouds, which helps the water droplets to merge and stick together to form precipitation, ‘like dry hair to a comb’.

‘When the drops merge and are big enough, they will fall as rain,’ Professor Ambaum said.

Alya Al-Mazroui, director of the UAE’s rain-enhancement science-research program, told Arab News in March: ‘Equipped with a payload of electric-charge emission instruments and customised sensors, these drones will fly at low altitudes and deliver an electric charge to air molecules, which should encourage precipitation.’

The plane are armed with an array of salt flares which are fired into a promising clouds to increase condensation and hopefully trigger a downpour.

The UAE is one of the most arid countries on Earth and the technique helps to increase its meagre annual rainfall.

The oil-rich desert nation ranks among the world’s top 10 driest countries.

Its annual rainfall stands at 78 millimetres (three inches), 15 times less than an average annual rainfall in the UK. Cloud seeding is seen as being much cheaper than alternative methods of obtaining water by desalination.

The UAE is also looking into methods to preserve the rain that does hit the ground, instead of allowing it to quickly evaporate or flow off into the sea.

It has built dams and reservoirs to gather the flood.

4 Ways Technology Plays a Role In Commercial Real Estate Investing, With Rob Finlay

As technology continues to take a greater stance in everyday life, the real estate industry is taking major steps to embrace technology solutions in trading. An increasing number of real estate companies are integrating technology services into their operations, and real estate professionals continue to see the benefits.

Before 2020, the commercial real estate industry was already experiencing major changes, but since COVID-19 hit, the industry has practically been forced to take things online. Now, with an extreme emphasis on sanitation and safety, the need for technology to create more flexible and efficient work experiences has intensified.

Rob Finlay, founder and CEO of Thirty Capital, understands this need to bring commercial real estate investing to the next level. At Thirty Capital, Finlay combines innovative technology and experience to help commercial real estate companies grow profits.

  1. Communication Between Buyers and Sellers

A few years ago, buyers and sellers would typically communicate through face-to-face meetings, phone calls, or emails. But today, a more direct and immediate form of communication is needed. The idea of “try before you buy” has even emerged, and in commercial real estate, this means using virtual reality (VR) to conduct virtual tours or showcase 360-degree high-quality photography.

Even at a distance, brokers and sellers can communicate with investors like never before.

“Before the pandemic, investors and prospective buyers had the luxury of walking the grounds, physically seeing the property, analyzing the electrical system up close, and observing each nook and cranny of the building,” explains Finlay.

“But now, using drone footage and VR, you can place your virtual feet in the vicinity of a potential investment opportunity. This alone has massively changed the way commercial real estate investing is done.”

This type of technology offers the advantage of virtual planning and organization. So, even if a building is distressed or empty, VR lets investors furnish it or add amenities. This allows buyers and investors to obtain a more accurate visualization of property and its potential.

  1. Saves Time and Money

Advancing technologies similar to VR have helped spread head commercial real estate agents investing, and it’s this kind of technology that saves time and money.

Additionally, commercial real estate agents have been learning how to use technology to track market changes and leasing activity. This enables them to be better prepared for market trends. By purchasing access to those technological platforms, real estate companies can incorporate them into their daily operations.

Even amongst families today, technology has made it easier to work and do school from home. With tools like Zoom, Go to Meeting, Podio, FaceTime, and other recourses, virtual collaboration is being facilitated now more than ever.

According to a Gallup survey, 43 percent of working Americans spend a portion of their work hours operating remotely. The same survey also shows an increase in the number of Americans working from home, going from 24 percent to approximately 31 percent. This sudden growth is due to an increase in employee satisfaction and productivity when people work from home, as well as decreases employer costs.

“Many might see this as a disruption for the commercial real estate industry, but it gives us more of a challenge. While the demand for actual office space is decreasing, the demand for more working space within the home is increasing. Now, people want to purchase houses that include a separate room which they can turn into their very own ‘office,’” says Finlay.

“Real estate investing now becomes more accessible, and this enables us to look for opportunities that we otherwise would have glossed over.”

  1. Streamlines Operations

It seems as though everything has been moved online. From buying clothing to ordering groceries, companies who are shifting operations to online are experiencing a much more streamlined experience.

A few years ago, people thought the use of drones to deliver Amazon packages right to your doorstep was revolutionary, but now, the use of article intelligence (AI) is on the horizon.

Companies like Thirty Capital are looking to utilize such unique technological solutions. “It’s this kind of revolutionary technology that our team of professionals at Thirty Capital could take advantage of to streamline operations,” Finlay explains.

“Some of our services include asset & portfolio management software, entity management solutions, and more, and using technology helps us better assist and serve our clients to grow their profits.”

While AI is still an evolving field, the commercial real estate industry can start implementing technology into its operations now. Whether it’s tracking new leads, automating repetitive and time-consuming takes, or streamlining daily workflow, AI allows employees to focus solely on bigger picture tasks.

  1. Increases Digital Presence and Availability

With advanced technology, real estate investment companies have all the tools they need to sell. Expanding their digital presence, working to become more available, and connecting with customers to create personalized tours and experiences are just a few ways these companies can improve their services.

When it comes to communications and purchasing, technology can open the door for more secure business transactions. Using smart contracts and digital signatures can make investing in real estate more efficient without the unnecessary risk.

Buyers can also make better and quicker investment decisions with fewer middlemen in the sales process. Using online resources, deals can be processed much faster with far fewer expenses and a reduced chance for fraud. This also gives buyers greater peace of mind with higher transparency and understanding.

The Future of CRE With Technology

Digital transformation and advancement are happening all around us, and the potential benefits for companies using this technology are massive. In the real estate industry, many people tend to hold onto the “some things never change” way of thinking. But as we’ve entered the age of innovation, real estate transactions can be even faster, safer, and more accessible.

A business owner doesn’t have to dive in headfirst to see these benefits …

Taking small steps to implement more tech-forward strategies and embracing this new thought process can help fulfill the acquisition of technology in the commercial real estate industry.

How Safe is Your Mobile for Handling Money?

The way in which we bank is continuing to change in the UK, with as many as four-in-10 Brits now regularly making use of mobile banking apps.

However, this change in behaviour has raised significant issues pertaining to security and accessibility, causing some to ask whether smartphones are safe for the purpose of handling money.

We’ll explore this below, by appraising mobile safety in relation to a handful of common financial applications. These include:

1. Mobile Banking

Not every mobile banking app has been created equal, which is why independent resources such as Which regularly utilise cybersecurity experts to test the defences of individual platforms and services.

Testing factors such as encryption, account management and login security, the results of September 2020’s study were telling, with Starling reporting an overall high score of 85% and Tesco Bank trailing last with just 46%.

So, what exactly should you look for in a mobile banking app? Well, try to utilise an app that doesn’t store bank details directly on your handset, instead opting to save your most sensitive information in a secure data centre.

Apps should also enable you to utilise so-called “multi-factor authentication”, which combines a password or pin with unique codes (and similar entities) to provide an additional layer of encryption.

2. Online Trading

You’ll also need to consider such factors if you’re an online trader, with platforms such as the MetaTrader 4 renowned for their optimal levels of encryption and security.

In this respect, proven apps like the MT4 are incredibly secure and well-protected, while they enable you to trade securely without requiring you to compromise on market access or the range of trading tools that you have at your disposal.

The versatility of such apps also allows for increased safety, as you can access them through both native apps and dedicated browsers.

If you’re accessing the MT4 through a mobile or desktop browser, for example, you can utilise safe or private browsing to create an additional layer of security for your most sensitive data.

3. Online Shopping and Payments

It’s estimated that the revenue generated through mcommerce will more than double between 2019 and 2024, with this expected to peak at $105.28 billion in four years time.

This has spawned a wide range of mobile-focussed payment apps, from native tools on iOS and Android to Samsung Pay and PayPal.

Arguably, Apple Pay is the best of these, as it negates the need to download an app, can work seamlessly with iMessage and enables you to safeguard your information through integrated 2FA.

Android users can also access Google Pay, which boasts similar levels of security and widespread acceptance in online outlets across the board.

The Top 10 Tech Events that You Don’ Want to Miss this Summer

We woke reasonably late following the feast and free flowing wine the night before. After gathering ourselves and our packs, we headed down to our homestay family’s small dining room for breakfast.

Refreshingly, what was expected of her was the same thing that was expected of Lara Stone: to take a beautiful picture.

We were making our way to the Rila Mountains, where we were visiting the Rila Monastery where we enjoyed scrambled eggs, toast, mekitsi, local jam and peppermint tea.

Adderall and flirting with bulimia in an attempt to whittle herself

We wandered the site with other tourists

Yet strangely the place did not seem crowded. I’m not sure if it was the sheer size of the place, or whether the masses congregated in one area and didn’t venture far from the main church, but I didn’t feel overwhelmed by tourists in the monastery.

City Guide for Vienna

Headed over Lions Bridge and made our way to the Sofia Synagogue, then sheltered in the Central Market Hall until the recurrent (but short-lived) mid-afternoon rain passed.

Feeling refreshed after an espresso, we walked a short distance to the small but welcoming Banya Bashi Mosque, then descended into the ancient Serdica complex.

We were exhausted after a long day of travel, so we headed back to the hotel and crashed.

I had low expectations about Sofia as a city, but after the walking tour I absolutely loved the place. This was an easy city to navigate, and it was a beautiful city – despite its ugly, staunch and stolid communist-built surrounds. Sofia has a very average facade as you enter the city, but once you lose yourself in the old town area, everything changes.

Clothes can transform your mood and confidence. Fashion moves so quickly that, unless you have a strong point of view, you can lose integrity. I like to be real. I don’t like things to be staged or fussy. I think I’d go mad if I didn’t have a place to escape to. You have to stay true to your heritage, that’s what your brand is about.
