Why you shouldn’t buy Google shares now

It’s not been a rosy year for the world’s most popular search engine. Google has underperformed against its tech peers and notably the Nasdaq 100, where it gained about 15% vs. the index’s 32% return in 2020.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted business activities around major global economic hubs, Google had failed to be relatively impressive on the average.

To date, the stock is finding it difficult to break the $1600 resistance level and it’s not showing upside strength like other tech peers that include Facebook, Apple, Amazon, and even Microsoft.

It’s not surprising that its recent earnings coming from its core business, Google Search failed to excite investors, which is the most important contributor to revenues, as it took a hit from COVID-19, with sales down -2% YoY in Q2.

The technology juggernaut is the only FAANG (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google) stocks with revenues down year-over-year, although its earnings trend remains solid.

Given that the stock has failed to break the critical resistance level as the share price dropped from its 52 weeks high of $1,597.72 price level, and remains the least choice among the FAANG stocks.

Gistsbaze expects a pullback in the stock price to the $1,550 support level in the mid-term, except it ramps up revenues in its advertising and hardware segments.

Recall Gistsbaze some weeks ago, gave insights on why Stock traders had not been relatively bullish on the stock, due to growing concern on Google’s inability to raise its revenue from advertising was partly responsible for the unimpressive performance in its share price.

Quick fact: Google LLC is an American multinational tech juggernaut that handles Internet-related products and services which include a search engine, cloud computing online advertising technologies, software, and hardware.

It is a subsidiary of Alphabet company. It presently has a valuation of over $1 trillion and at the time this report was drafted traded at $1,580.

However, taking a critical look at the company’s other streams of income, Gistsbaze observed notably that Google cloud and Youtube produced an impressive performance, growing 43% and 6%, respectively thereby giving the bulls a strong case for the stock to remain above the $1,500 support level.

For Google to change its present status quo the stock would have to break the $1,600 resistance level, before its next earnings results and probably start monetizing its payment services.

Presently, Gistsbaze is not bullish on Google’s stock price, as its peers in recent times offer better returns on capital. That said Gistsbaze would be a strong buyer of the stock on any breach below the $1,500 support level.

World Bank delays approval for Nigeria’s $1.5bn loan over Naira reform

The World Bank is delaying approval of Nigeria’s request for a $1.5 billion loan due to concerns over desired reforms, Reuters reports.

Unidentified sources told Reuters that the main concern being expressed by the World Bank was Naira reform.

Both the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, IMF, have, in the past, advised Nigeria to float its currency and allow market forces to determine the value of the naira.

According to the report, the World Bank had aimed to bring the loan request to its board for approval this August but the approval will now be delayed till October.

“They are not convinced about the reforms,” Reuters quoted a source close to the government to have said.

Although the World Bank has not outlined any demands, fuel subsidies and electricity tariffs were also said to be a part of the discussions.

The CBN has devalued the naira twice in 2020 and the Federal Executive Council in July, approved the removal of petrol subsidy.

The finance ministry was reported to have directed queries to the World Bank and while the Bretton Wood institution said discussions had reached an advanced stage, it confirmed that the loan request had not been presented to its board.

“Of particular importance are the steps the government is taking to marshal the needed fiscal resources for a pro-poor response to the crisis and undertake the reforms that will help ensure a robust recovery,” Reuters quoted a statement by the World Bank to have read.

The World Bank has already projected that Nigeria is heading for its worst recession in 40 years, which the Finance Minister, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, reiterated last week.

To meet budgetary obligations, the Nigerian government requested for loans worth $6.9 billion from the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and African Development Bank.

The IMF approved a $3.4 billion loan for Nigeria in April.

Algerian Quits Olympics Rather Than Take On Israeli In Judo Match

TOKYO — An Algerian judo competitor has chosen to ditch the Tokyo Olympics rather than hit the mat with an Israeli.

It was the second time in two years that ninth-ranked Fethi Nourine withdrew from a major judo competition rather than take on sixth-ranked Israeli Tohar Butbul.

Nourine and his coach, Amar Benikhlef, told Algerian media that they were boycotting Butbul to support the Palestinians.

“My position of the Palestinian issue is firm,” Nourine said on Thursday. “I will not recognize the Israeli flag, and I will not get my hands dirty with it.”

Benikhlef said “we were not lucky with the draw.”

“We got an Israeli opponent, and that’s why we had to retire,” the coach said. “We made the right decision.”

There has been no official response from the Israelis, but the International Judo Federation quickly slapped Nourine and his coach with a temporary suspension and said both could face more sanctions after the games are over.

“These actions were taken based on the official recorded declarations of both Fethi Nourine and Amar Benikhlef, that were published in the media and that are in total opposition to the philosophy of the International Judo Federation,” the organization said in a statement. “The IJF has a strict non-discrimination policy, promoting solidarity as a key principle, reinforced by the values of judo.”

In response, the Algerian Olympic committee withdrew both men’s accreditation and made plans to send them home.

Behind the scenes in Olympic host city Tokyo
Nourine had faced a possible second round matchup on Monday with Butbul in the 73K division. His first round opponent was Sudan’s Mohamed Abdalrasool.

Two years ago, Nourine pulled out of the 2019 Judoka World Championships when he was pitted against Butbul.

The Algerian’s refusal to compete with Butbul for a second time came on the same day the director of the Tokyo Olympics’ opening ceremony was fired for making a Holocaust joke during a comedy show back in 1998.

During the ceremony Friday, the organizers paused to remember the nine members of the Israeli team who were murdered by Palestinian terrorists during the 1972 summer Olympics in Munich, Germany.

It’s not the first time that Israeli judo competitors have been shunned by rivals from Arab states.

Back in 2016, at the games in Brazil, an Egyptian who later quit the sport refused to shake the hand of an Israeli who had just defeated him.

And in April, the IJF hit the Iranian Judo Federation with a four-year ban for demanding that its athletes refuse to fight Israeli opponents.

I would make same comments as Bishop Kukah if I was addressing same audience – Governor Ortom slams Presidency

Governor Samuel Ortom has slammed the Presidency for tackling Catholic bishop of Sokoto diocese, Mathew Kukah over his comments about the Buhari-led administration before the US Congress.

Tontrends reported the Presidency had accused Kukah of trying to sow discord and strife among Nigerians following his comment of Buhari showing preference to people of his religion and worsening the rivalry between Christians and Muslims.

The Presidency had also described Kukah’s claim of only Christian schools being targeted by bandits or terrorists as untrue.

Reacting to the Presidency’s comment in a statement released by his media aide Terver Akase, Ortom who warned the Presidency against intimidating Nigerians who want the best for the country, stated that he would have similar things to what Kukah said if he was addressing same audience.

Stressing that the country is practicing democracy which has no room for repression and dictatorship, the Governor added that the constitution guarantees freedom of speech to all citizens, unlike a military regime which suppresses the right of the people to voice their opinions on challenges facing their country.

The statement read;

“Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom describes as unfortunate, the response of the Presidency to the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matttew Kukah’s address to United States Congress Committee on Foreign Affairs regarding the wave of insecurity in the country.

“The Governor says he stands with Bishop Kukah on the issues he raised and stresses that he would have said similar things if he were to address the same audience.

“He advises the Federal Government to stop intimidating patriotic Nigerians who are raising genuine concerns over the worsening security and economic situation in the country.

“Governor Ortom states that the country is practicing democracy which has no room for repression and dictatorship. He notes that the country’s Constitution guarantees the freedom of speech to all citizens, unlike a military regime which suppresses the right of the people to voice their opinions on challenges facing their country.

“He says Bishop Kukah is one Nigerian who is selfless and speaks his mind frankly on national issues calling on the government to ensure justice, the rule of law and equity for all.

“The Governor wonders why the Presidency has chosen to politicize the views of Bishop Kukah when all the issues he highlighted in his address are facts about the country.

“He says Kukah was right when he stated that nepotism has been elevated above federal character by the present administration. He further agrees with the Bishop that Christians across the country are targets of elimination and thousands have already fallen to the sword of jihadist supremacists.

“Governor Ortom states that Kukah is not to blame for the ranking of Nigeria as the 8th least peaceful country in Africa and the rating of killer herdsmen as the 4th deadliest terror group in the world by the Global Terrorism Index.

“He expects the Presidency to rather be worried that Nigeria is ranked as the most terrorised nation in Africa with an average of over 2,000 deaths per year on account of terrorism.

“He emphasizes that the combative approach the Presidency has adopted in engaging citizens on issues will not solve the problems confronting the country.

“Governor Ortom says Bishop Kukah is not the first Nigerian to address a foreign audience on the security situation in the country. He recalls that in February, 2015 President Buhari was at the time the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, when he delivered a speech at Chatham House in London, where he stated that “Boko Haram has sadly put Nigeria on the terrorism map, killing more than 13,000 of our nationals.” The President went on to announce to the world on that occasion that apart from the civil war era, Nigeria had never been more insecure in the country’s history.

“The Governor states that if a man who was seeking to govern the country could reel out such scary statistics, why will his aides now launch media attacks on a clergyman who is only advocating peace and is drawing the attention of the global community to the plight of helpless Nigerians.”
